The Henraux Foundation has collaborated with Palazzo Strozzi and the Hillary Merkus Foundation on the occasion of There Are Other Fish In The Sea, a new site-specific installation for the courtyard of Palazzo Strozzi by SUPERFLEX, the internationally recognised Danish collective known for works and long-term projects that rethink the role of art in relation to the social, economic, and environmental dynamics of our time. The installation is produced in collaboration with Kunsthal Spritten, Aalborg, Denmark that will host the work in a renewed version at its grand opening, to be announced soon.

Curated by Arturo Galansino, Director General of the Fondazione Palazzo Strozzi, the installation will establish a suggestive and unexpected dialogue with the Renaissance architecture of the Courtyard, prompting reflection on ongoing environmental transformations in the contemporary world. Anticipating a future in which rising sea levels will irreversibly alter human life, There Are Other Fish In The Sea proposes considering marine species as future inhabitants of our architectures. On the 60th anniversary of Florence's 1966 flood, the project invites rethinking our relationship with the environment, questioning traditional human centrality.

The work consists of eight large pink travertine columns, made of modular blocks, placed in Palazzo Strozzi's courtyard within a large water basin that reflects them, the surrounding space, the sky, and visitors, establishing a direct confrontation with the architectural environment. Characterized by faceted surfaces, the columns are designed as potential habitats for marine life. Biodiversity in the seas thrives around structures with ample available surface area; thus, the modules composing the columns feature numerous irregular planes of varying sizes.

In the coming decades, many human-built buildings will be destined to be underwater. Therefore, with There Are Other Fish In The Sea, SUPERFLEX proposes an interspecies architecture project, developed according to the Interspecies Architectural Manifesto—a set of propositions the group has defined to design architectures that account for other species' needs. The work reinterprets Palazzo Strozzi's Renaissance space as a starting point to imagine new forms of construction and coexistence, suggesting how the past can contribute to defining scenarios where humans and other species are increasingly integrated and interdependent.

Developed specifically for Palazzo Strozzi, the installation is part of the Palazzo Strozzi Future Art program promoted by Fondazione Palazzo Strozzi and Fondazione Hillary Merkus Recordati, supporting contemporary artists' interventions that generate new perspectives between past and future.
